Lister
Richard Lister is the author of The Third Team—NFL
Officials, Their Lives, Their Stories, released in late 2010. Having
loved football since his youth, Richard found intrigue in the men
who ascend to officiate at the game’s highest level. The anomaly of
their being integral to the country’s most popular spectator sport,
while staying under the radar, fueled his curiosity about who they
are and what drives them. He wanted to explore how they combine
their work on the field with mainstream occupations. He set out to
discover what separates them as well as to learn what challenges
they encounter on and off the field. His
book tells stories from inside NFL officiating. Dick spent three
years doing research and interviewing 25 former and current NFL
officials, including such greats as Jim Tunney, Jerry Markbreit, Bob
McElwee, and Red Cashion. He talked with former league supervisors
Art McNally, Jerry Seeman and Mike Pereira. He also interviewed
former coaches Steve Mariucci, Tony Dungy, Herman Edwards, Jerry
Glanville, along with TV analyst and former player Matt Millen, and
others to get a third person’s perspective on the work done by NFL
officiating crews. The book and the stories shared by those
interviewed reveal the composite of the NFL official, showing the
talent, personality, and passion of those who have reached the
profession’s peak.
As football officials combine their on-field work
with their day jobs, so too does Dick with his writing. He has been
a trial attorney in Southern California for 33 years. At present his
practice includes work as a mediator. And as with football officials
and their passion for work on the field, Dick finds the opportunity
to have written about football officiating to have been a powerful
and gratifying experience. The Third Team will leave the discerning
football fan and reader with a different way of looking at football
officials at all levels.
