Barry Mano - Referee Magazine, NASO
Barry was born in 1943 in Racine, Wisconsin.
Married since 1968 to Jean and has one daughter (Julie, born 1978).
Past employment/endeavors include: technical writer in hydraulic
engineering at the J.I. Case Company; Urban Affairs Specialist for
the Schlitz Brewing Company; owner/operator of B’s Speed &
Automotive when he was 18-years old, and for nine years with his
older brother, was co-owner and crew-chief of a
nationally-recognized drag-racing team.
Barry is the founder and president of REFEREE Enterprises, Inc.
(1976). Barry serves as publisher/executive editor of REFEREE
Magazine - the most widely read officiating monthly in the world
[77,000 readers]. He is also the founder (1980) and president of the
National Association of Sports Officials. NASO has 16,000 active
members. The association has been and continues to be in the
vanguard of legislative and legal efforts to protect the men and
women who officiate sports today. NASO also sponsors and hosts the
annual Sports Officiating Summit conference, considered the premier
officiating gathering each year.
Barry’s officiating experience includes be a basketball referee for
23 years, starting working high-school varsity games while still a
senior in high school. Worked small-college games in Wisconsin and
Illinois for over a decade. Worked NCAA Division I games for almost
ten years. He worked a quarter-final NIT game and worked the
championship game of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic
Association) national tournament (a triple overtime game won by
Midland Texas Junior College). He was one of 12 USA officials then
licensed to worked games administered under international (FIBA)
rules.
He has given more than a dozen seminars for the University of
Wisconsin, Continuing Education Program including full-day
workshops. Has served as a guest lecturer on topics related to
magazines: writing, desktop publishing, financials, strategy
creation, etc. at a number of universities and schools. Barry’s
speaking engagements include corporate sales conferences, executive
roundtables and retreats, publishing groups, manager-training
seminars, sport associations, officiating banquets and seminars,
keynote school commencement programs and sales conference breakfast
kickoff presentations.
